Rainwater is not subject to filtration like tap water. If you live in an area where there is heavy pollution, it is not advisable to use rainwater. It can contain traces of heavy metals and sulfur dioxide.
My rain water is very soft and would be ideal fish that need it. That's the only benefit. I don't use it because we have hard winters up here and melting snow is too much work. I would worry about what it runs off of to collect it. Off my roof and down the gutter and into a rain barrel it could pick up parasites or worse. I would want to add chlorine to kill that stuff and then dechlorinate before putting in my tank. Or use a UV light through filtration. Too much work for me as is RO water.
I know lots of hobbyists who collect rain water for breeding purposes. They don't start collecting the water until it has rained for a while. That way most of the contaminents have been washed out of the air.
