I just got a wild caught pair of these guys. They haven't been particularly happy with my choice for their tanks or tank mates, until today. I moved them into a larger tank, with slightly smaller fish, and fed frozen brine shrimp. All of a sudden, the female went red...in the belly. I can't find much info on this fish, but that seems to mean a female is ready to breed. She had not been red before today...looked identical to the male, just smaller.

Any suggestions? Anyone keeping this species with any advice? I'm not
going to mess with them a whole lot while they are holding. I know biparental mouthbrooder...but that's about all.

Thanks!

I had read that before, but thank you. I bought Anton Lamboj's book, and had checked that as well. Just wondering if there was anything else I needed to know...I do appreciate it.

They are pretty fish. I am enjoying them very much.

I have no experience keeping westies other than kribs so there's not much I can add much but I would assume their keeping would be much like that of Pelvicachromis sp.
If you ever decide to ship I'd be interested in some fry! I've always wanted some Dimidiochromis sp. or Divandu. :naughty:

Well, I got mine from Dave's Rare fish, he donated them for a charity auction. He may still have some if you are interested.

Here is the info I've gotten on this fish...biparental mouth brooder, pair bonding, and they need something to defend against to strengthen the pair bond. They can be aggressive little guys. If they pair, they will breed in lots of different water types, so soft water and low ph isn't a must for this species...I just may get less per spawn.

Seems they are fairly abundant in the wild, but it is rare that they are collected due to their locale. And they are jumpers...I found that out the hard way. Luckily I found the escapee before the cats did.
