gar i just traded for has a bent back. i dont know if this ONLY means that its broken or maybe just a deformity. i didnt notice it when i just popped the hood off and glanced. ill have to provide pics later but maybe someone can give me an idea. its a florida/spotted

definitely some damage to the gar's back, but may not be critical. does the fish have full control of its posterior fins? can it breach the surface without excessive effort (compared to other gars)? it may just be a sprain or moderate damage, at which point the gar may have difficulty with "normal" swimming, but would likely survive as long as it doesn't further agitate the injury--

it does indeed have full control of its posterior fins and swims fairly effortlessly. does not seem to have any issues getting to the surface for air. competes for food fine with my normal florida. his back is a bit of an eyesore but he deserves a good home as long as he isnt suffering.

i think broken

ok given your recent info i would just treat it as a normal gar. if it has no problems with fin controls, getting food, etc etc...just keep him as is. sounds like it was damaged earlier on, but it wasn't severe enough to cause major problems, and the gar will likely be fine (just looking a little different) --
