My jaguar cichlid has been battling some type of internal issue for the past several weeks which I initially thought was a result of constipation and internal parasites he may have gotten from some new roseline barbs. I treated him with Prazipro twice and epsom salts (3 tsp per 5 gallon which seemed to be we tolerated by all the fish in the tank). Initially he appeared to slowly be getting better but now has taken a turn for the worse so I began treating him with Kanaplex three days ago and increased the temperature to 83. I read Kanaplex is good for internal infections and is easily absorbed but so far new improvement. Is there a better option or something I should use in conjunction with the Kanaplex? He's still eating but he's listless and constantly floats at the top of the tank with his head pointed downward. I've had him for almost 10 years and it would be a big blow to lose him because I failed to treat him properly. Thanks for any help.

It's tough to say what's best if you don't have a diagnosis. Kanamycin is great against many types of gram negative bacteria, but if your infection is gram positive it won't do anything.

And we don't even know if it's bacterial. Kanamycin won't really deal with viruses or (although rare) true fungal infections.

So if you want to know the best medication to use you have to know what you're treating. However, most bacterial fish pathogens are gram negative rods.
