Hi,

What are the best freshwater plants for sand?

I have a 3"-4" black sand bed and I am wondering what I can grow in it.

20 gallon high tank.

Thank you!

You can grow amazon swords, valisneria, tiger lotus, baby tears etc. if u add a lot of plants and not enough nutrients, high demand plants or not enough livestock to supply the nitrate then supplements are needed.

Should be able to grow most plants. If it’s a substrate feeder then add root tabs. If it’s a column feeder then add liquid fertz. If it’s a demanding plant then a mix of root tabs, liquid fertz and co2.

This is my sand substrate tank.
The plants are Vallisneria (right), Hydrilla, and an Amazon sword now growing in a semi floating log , moved to the log because the Valisneria were choking it out
I don't use ferts, or CO2.

The tank is a 180 gal, that gets about 3 hours fairly strong, eastern sun in the morning, and maybe 2 hours indirect less intense, western sun in the late afternoon.
I don't use any artificial light. It holds about 15 fish most are cichlids 3347450C-83BB-4410-9818-4C01FDC58359_1_201_a.jpeg
in the 3-5" range, (and one 10" goby)
