Ive been looking around and have really started liking dats and was really interested in getting some. What would you say is the best beginner datnoid? and just how hard are they to take care of as in keeping them stable and what not?
thanks-zach

Dats are not really that tough. Do not associate stable coloration with health though. No one is entirely sure why some dats are stable at times and other times not.....Its a form of natural camoflouge....Some just like to strut, others more into blending in. Dats are not all mindless and robotic like Silver Dollars or others. More like large Cichlids in complexity. Just have great water parameters and a big enough tank!

thats good to know! i thought that being unstable meant really stressed or sick. im planning on getting a 150g or up tank this summer. preferably 180g 6x2x2 or 240 8x2x2 would this be big enough for them and which species would you recommend?

I think Indo's are the best choice to begin with as they are most widely available (at least in Europe).. Tank sizes you mentioned are sufficient I think, depends on how many you want to keep of course.

Keeping Dats is a real joy.. Have fun!

You should maybe try AT (silvers). From experience they are a lot more hardier. Dats are pretty hard to keep. They get sick easily and you need to keep the water perfect. A dat can be stable and unstable due to many things such as being stressed out or excited. One of my NTT datnoid turns a bright yellow when its feeding time or when he/she see's me and is almost stable all the time.

Silvers Are the least expensive

silvers are a brackish water fish

indos are a good starter

NGT are aggressive

thin bars are the least aggressive but not as hardy as others
