Best beginner predatory fish?

Tank size makes a big difference. Also depends what you want out of the fish, just something that eats other fish or with a bit more personality. Something large or small? To a small insect, a betta is a dangerous predator.
That said, for a moderately sized tank, a red or purple wolf is one of the easiest predatory fish you can keep. Very hardy and will eat just about anything.

snakeheads for me if you can buy a group of young say Pulchra grow them on and get a pair out of them they make a fab species tank , show predatory behaviour and looks great plus in these high energy price times require less heating

55 gallons, planning on buying a 125 gallon

For a 55 I’d definitely do a red wolf.
125 I’d lean towards a shoal of piranhas.

Ctenopoma acutirostre and Ctenolucius hujeta are pretty beginner-friendly. Will fit in a 55g for life too.
