?best bichir 4 a 55g?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
You'll definitely need to stick with one of the 'smaller' species because of the dimensions of the 55 gallon tank (which is a nice, long tank but not very wide). I'd recommend Polypterus senegalus as a good candidate because it is relatively small, generally quite active, and commonly available. If you can find one, Polypterus palmas polli and Polypterus retropinnis would also do well in a 55 gallon.

I agree with fruitbat the polypterus senegalus doesnt get extremely big and is a nice addition to a tank, he's fairly docile with any similar sized fish but can seem to be a bit territorial with his own kind. You wont have any problems getting him to eat from your hand

:grinyes: Senegalas are AWESEOME !!!!!!!!! CHECK OUT MY PICS.....they have the most character out of any bichir eels!(in my opinion)

They are called bichirs you tool, not bichir "eels" :)

I really like the ornate bichirs, but they get to big for that tank. Try to score an albino senegalus, same personality, but cooler looking.

I love Armored or Delhzi bichirs, they stay pretty small. Wih the exception of the Ornate and polyterus senegalus meriadonalis (spelling), most of the "overbite" type polypterus stay pretty small. Don't forget about the ropefish too!
