is it possible to have a clog from sponges that are too dense
Absolutely it is.....if you're lazy!! Typically sponges used as mech filtration are cleaned at maintainance time, mine get a thorough wash and rinse under a warm tap until the water runs clear. No time to clog in my set up.

And as i've already mentioned, any sponges used as your secondary tier bio media, AS LONG AS YOUR MECH SIDE IS EFFICIENT AT PARTICULATE REMOVAL, then these sponges will remain crud free for a long time. Mine get a quick rinse maybe once a year....IN TANK WATER.

It all boils down to maintainance.

I like the stand, did you use 2x4s or 3s or did you just plate it with thin strips of plywood?
Back on topic though, is it possible to have a clog from sponges that are too dense?
I built the stand with 2 by fours and then we put tongue and groove paneling over it And also skinned it with 2 layers of plywood

good idea, do you think in that case it'd be possible to take hardwood flooring samples/panels and line stands or racks with them?

I have recently inherited my dad's eheim ecco pro 300, and as a canister, it has the typical compartments. This is coincidentally my first canister, what should I put in said compartments? should I just get filter floss and ceramic balls and call it a day?
Eheim Substrat Pro...no question. It is the best design and formulation.

My son has a 20 gallon freshwater tank and I was having to change the water every few weeks or change out the filtration substrates every few weeks but one of the staff at the local aquarium shop suggested I use this Poly filter media pad. I cut them into squares and place them in my HOB aqeon filter , in place of the filter cartridge. Absorbs any toxins that may get in the shipping water. It is easy to do. Especially if the fish have not been fasted and purged of any waste. Other things can get in the water too.

I use poret foam for "baffles " in my sump so I can have different sections and increased bio. I really like it
Agree
I don't like glass or any other hard material as a baffle in sumps, but have found Porret Foam (because it acts as a barrier for sectioning off the pump), becomes very useful as mechanical, and biofiltration in my 125 gal sump.

When it gets saturated with debris, I just pull it out and hose it down. A few bags of biomedia and a porous block behind it, add a little xtra bio surface area if I over clean it.

But its surface area alone is subtancial enough, it is 20" across x 21" high x 2" thick.

and because the sump also acts as a refugium for 100 or so freshwater shrimp, they help whittle down debris, by eating larger pieces that might clog it.

i never understood why people use bio balls, wouldnt a sponge pad rolled up or something have much more surface area than bio balls?
