I am putting together everything for my new setup and I was looking for the best media for my setup. It will be fully submerged in my 75g sump sitting on and all around my tetra pond boxes attached to my pumps. Im thinking a bunch of ciramic rings in media bags. Might run air stones around them as I have a few extra air pumps laying around. Is this a good idea? Who makes the best rings and where is the best place to order them from? How much should I order? tank will be a medium stocked 225 with ca/sa cichlids and a couple panaque species plecos. Any input will be Greatly appreciated guys!

You could get a gallon container on amazon for like $30 or $40. Some of the cheapest media out there and it works great and it's easy to clean. I would say 2 gallons would be a sufficient amount.

If you are ok with spending some money, Hel-X (google!) is the best filter medium there is. Problem is it's quite expensive.

I paid 99 bucks for 20l pond matrix bucket n I used to feed over a half lb a day and never once had ammonia. If ceramic rings r ur thing check under vendors I think like Charlie n the fish tank factory or something had a few diff qualities for the cheapest I've ever seen

I just realized I have have over $100 in gift cards for a lfs I never go to from christmas. I'm going to go there and see what they have. I believe they will have pond matrix and fluval biomax. I think I will buy plenty of both. I will update later. Any problems with either media in my setup? Would it be beneficial to run air stones under the media that is not directly on the pond box?

Not necesarry. There should be plenty of aeration from surface agitation in the sump itself.

it will be running around 2500 gph so it wont be an issue. But I currently have 2 air pumps I wont be using and I figured what the heck. A little extra air flow couldn't hurt.

I think you'd be good with either the pond matrix and or biomax. I think the pond matrix is a little bit more cost effective, but I may be wrong.

I run an airpump in my sump, but only use it during water changes most of the time just to provide some movement while the pumps are off. Moving that much water through an overflow should provide all the O2 you really need, but I like having one available for "just in case" scenarios.
