I was planning to get an FX5 for my 150 but it wont fit in the stand, I even thought about cutting the hole bigger but money is tight and i dot want to tear up my stand. FX5 excluded, and money being tight, whats the best single C-filter for the money? Fluval 405, Filstar XP4, Cascade1500(currently using), and the new marineland filters are popular around here. If i had the $500 id go out and grab an Eheim pro3 but po folks dont have that kinda money!

I would go with a couple of used fluval 405s or a couple XP4s if you can get two used ones. if your only going to get one brand new, i would say the xp4, cause i believe it holds more media than the fluval 405. but i also think the 405 is a better design. guess it comes down to your personel choice.

any chance you can put the fx5 in the stand without the hoses on....then put them on.......one of our setups is this way ???

like the 405s

I prefur the 405's for a number of reasons. fill all of the baskets with bio-media and just use the stock foam for mechanical filtration. We have one on our 150 along with a couple of Emporers and hydro's and they do a great job. If I was going to run just cannisters on the tank I'd add a second 404/405 (not enough differance between them to worry about so buy what you get the best deal on.

I saw brand new 404's on ebay for less than 100 bucks a couple weeks ago. Last years models but still basically the same.

The only real differance between the 404 and the 405 series other than the color of the housing is how the hoses attach to the tank and I usually scrap the factory system in favor of better ones anyway. The 405 uses plastic clips to hold the hoses in place while the 404's used rubber bands that broke when they got old.

Yep, should be able to get 2 404/405's for the price of 1 fx5 anyway, I'd do that...I think you'd be better off in the long run anyway, I like using 2 filters, that way if one happens to crap out you're not sitting there with nothing.

no, my stand has 3 single opening doors and the opening is too small for the cylinder of the filter too fit. i would have to cut the stand to fit and i dont want to do that.

Hmm, a 150 and it wont fit through the doors? Do you have the space to put the canister outside the tank, next to the stand? And then maybe buid a small cabinet for that?
