I have 2 hw304b filters in mu 125 gallon tank. I have been noticing my nitrates are really high. And today I looked into my tank and it seems like the filters are not picking up anything even the poop right under the intake. I think these filters are not a good choice. Ready to sell them and get something good.

I've got both fx5 and fx6 not much difference between the two both good filters for the money imo

I have 2 of those filters on my 180 and its doing fine. You didn't give many useful details like: when did you clean the mechanical media last?; Has the return flow decrease?; What media are you loading into the trays and how tightly packed is it?

There are members here who've had these things for multiple years and consider them good filters, especially for the price.

Without enough insight, I can only come to the conclussion that your filter needs a thorough maintenance, mechanical media needs to be replaced, and/or biological media packed too tightly.

You can go ahead and get something like an FX at 400% more the cost for each unit, but if you don't do the proper maintenance or pack the canister too tight you'll probably run into similar problems or wear out the motor quicker.

FYI, nitrate isn't removed by the canister filter but by water chances and removing/vacuuming debris sitting on the bottom of the tank

I prefer sumps myself, but I do have a pair of those filters running on a few growout tanks and they work just fine. No canister is going to pick up all the waste in any tank with out a little help getting it to the intakes though, Fx5 included.

Been running those filters for about 2 years now.

To reduce nitrates, you need to add a lot of plants or do water changes, or get a nitrate filter. Adding more filters might help with mechanical filtration, but will not help with reducing nitrates.
