So I've had predatory fish out of my tank for less than a week, and the snail population has EXPLODED. I never even saw a single snail outside of the sump when my predators were in there, haha.

So my question is, what's the best cheap snail-killer that will likely be available at my LFS? Some kind of loach, no?

They've got nice clowns at my LFS but I'm not sure if that's the right kind for the job.

Open to any kind of suggestions. Plan is to give them away for free when I restock the tank, but I need them to keep snails under control for a month or so so my plants don't turn to swiss cheese.

As always, thanks for your advice and knowledge!

I've heard clowns are great snail eaters, A puffer would be cool...

If you want to do it fish less, add things like cucumber overnight, snails will gather on it, then just take it out and repeat, will work fine to keep it under control for a month

Nice! I'm excited because clowns are fun to watch and they have some pretty ones at the LFS.

Always great when you can do something simultaneously fun and utilitarian.

Will they be OK in PH 6 for about this amount of time? Most care sheets I read say their range is 6.5-7, which is pretty narrow.

They should be fine in a pH of 6. Shoot for getting at least five, as that is really the minimum recommended shoal size to mitigate stress. But it sounds like you're doing your homework! :)
