Kind of a piggy back on a similar thread, I am looking for a pair of cichlids for a 30 gal planted tank that will have some schooling rummy noses and cardinals, I am looking for suggestion besides rams , and apistos and no africans unless from west africa

You're kind of limited to those smaller species, aren't you? Maybe kribensis? Dwarf pike? Hard to say with the small schooling fish in there.

SA: laetacara curviceps, laetacara dorsigera, nannacara anomala, nannacara taenia, Taeniacara candidi, Dicrossus maculatus, Dicrossus filamentosus, Crenicichla compressiceps, Apistogramma viejita.

West Africa: Anomalochromis thomasi, Nanochromis nudiceps, Pelvicachromis subocellatus.

These might interesst you. My personal favourites are curviceps and dorsigera.

hmmm, not many cichlids will appreciate those tankmates other than apistos

and you'll want to go with south american cichlids. The tetras you have are not very forgiving of water quality and parameters. Your cardinals especially really need soft water. Africans really need harder water with higher pH's

Most tank bred fish will do fine in most normal water conditions. I kept cardinals and rummy nose just fine in my liquid concrete water for a few years and they stayed nice and healthy. Also, as mentioned, while African Rift Lake species do prefer harder, alkaline water, some West Africans come from an environment similar to the Amazon Basin and would be a pretty good match for SA tetras (there are also several species of tetra from the West African region as well that prefer conditions very similar to those of SA tetras)

try curviceps cody or some orange caucatoides we have alot of fish that would do well in that tank up at the shop
