im trying to change up the look of my tank and switching out the black and white mix substrate for possibly a red flint pool filter sand substrate. i saw this on some ones tank and it looked really clean and awesome and the fish color looked great. i dont have the greatest lighting as of right now but it seems to me that the black substrate on my fish like my paratheraps melanurus' is making their colors look too dark and dull. im investing in new usa current leds this week and i think with those lights and the red flint (red, brown and white mix sand) would make the fish color pop and the tank real nice and bright. what are your guys thoughts on substrate color? ive always heard black is the way to go and ive been using black for years but want to change up the look.

I don't care for the red at first its like wow cause its different but then it just looks to fake IMO.

I changed from black on black to white and blue and I like it. I think it makes the fish look nice. Yes Mbunas pop with the black but I think SA/CA cichlids look good with white or natural.

Old set up - I had Frontosa fry in this tank but you cant see them cause they are so dark.

New set up its actually white sand and natural play sand mixed

I look forward to seeing pics. Not sure how red sand looks more natural than natural colored tan or white but hey that's why we have different colors different people like different things.
