ATM i have black ecocomplete substrate and it displays the gt's colors really well. i want to get another 50lbs for the plants and so on also better light. but should i convert to brown gravel? or even white? but the white would drown out the colors. thanks
White substrates will bleach out your bichirs and they will end up looking so pale. Black substrates can bring in some greenish hue on most upper jaw species particularly on the head area. It can make the base color to darken up though and making them looking like a charcoal especially lower species. However it's not always the case. Ornate bichir can go with any substrates color and still color up nicely. It's usually the bichir complex are harder to make the pattern stable. Best substrates for bichirs are Red, Tan, Brown, Orange and Pink or any mix of those. I also add just a few Black color for the tone up the base color a bit. Not much or the base color and patterns will almost blend together.

I used to have mine on white but it completely faded my ornates, now ive got a mixture of white and charcoal, think i need some more charcoal in because its looking quite light at the moment.

Why not get brown, they are natural color. Used to have mine in black substrates 4 years ago. I just don't like the result. Makes my bichirs look ugly as most of my lower jaw species its like they been rolled on charcoal. I don't really care much about how natural the substrates color are, as I'm not taking care of the substrates. I'm am taking care of bichirs and I want them to be at their best color always.
