I just got a bunch of baby Dats, they look like Widebar, or at least they don't have the extra stripe of the Indos. Anyway, what is the best diet for faster growth. Right now they are eating chopped up market shrimp (shelled and raw, of course) and today I tried beef heart which they seem to like. They are about 1.5 - 2" a few runts 1", so I am feeding them twice a day morning and evening and they are really little pigs! Any other foods recommended?

They really are neat fish, they all hide in the corner where the sponge filter and a screen of Anubias are, then when you approach they all rush out and stare at you with those beady eyes, begging for food.

Bloodworms, Earthworms, Freeze Dried Krill, Live black worms, brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, Pellets..etc...basically any food accepted..

Just give them variety :) Mine eat freeze dry shrimp, market shrimp, arowana sticks, cichlid gold (sometimes) worms and beefheart...

Move live black worms to the front of that list and put bloodworms in the back and you've got it nailed:)

Live blackworms are not available locally, would have to order. Tried some shredded pieces of fresh frozen fish (local flounder) and they ate that somewhat grudgingly. They seem to like shrimp the best, but if the pieces are too large I find them uneaten and starting to decay. I need to get a "Magic Bullet" mini food processor to chop the shrimp up better. Also started a mosquito culture, in a few days I'll dump in a few hundred wrigglers that will keep them busy for a few minutes. If they don't like mosquito larvae I have a tank of Endlers Livebearers that will eat them. (And no, I am not feeding the Endlers to the Dats!)

variety is key. mine loves grasshoppers and crickets and mealworms, something he learned from my aro. now when i wave them in front of the glass he goes nuts.

I say anything a dat will eat is good. Mine eats fish and krill so far. The juvies eat brine, mysis, and bloodworms.
