I've been using the JW Smart Temps for awhile now, but I'm noticing way too many differences between tanks. I'm tired of recalibrating heaters to a thermometer that I don't even know if it is truly correct. What is the best bang for the buck digital thermometer that can also read high temps for a discus tank? I need 3 of them at a minimum, but I don't really want to spend $100 on a few thermometers if I don't have to.

I get cheap sticker ones that go to 94 degrees and they are only $3. I would trust those over digitals any day. If you have to get a digital I would get one of those waterproof reptile thermometers. They are only $10.

Yeah, so apparently my old school one from Petco that's glass with the weights at the bottom is the most accurate. Whatever I calibrated my heaters to was exactly how far off it showed on the good thermometer. Tomorrow I'll go back and buy them out of them after I test which ones are the closest to each other.

I have Coralife, JBJ, and Zoomed. While I like the fact that the JBJ and Zoomed are small, in tank, and inconspicuous...after a few months, the calibration is horrendously off. Zoomed seems to lose suction fairly quickly, condensation on the screen, and the battery life sucks. JBJ, I thought was more accurate, however, the first one I got was great, but I dropped it and didn't get any new ones for a couple of years. I got 2 of the JBJs later on. One of them, after a few months is now 30F off while the other seems to be 5F-8F off. Apparently, one of my tanks is currently at 110F. My Coralife has been the longest lasting one. Not the most ascetically appealing to me as it has to be placed outside the tank with a wire probe that goes in the tank, but I do know of other members having calibration issues with this brand as well.

Moral of the story...Digitals aren't that great. They are pricey compared to non-digitals, batteries needs changing constantly, haven't seen replacement suction cups for sale, will probably needs to be replaced often, no way of adjusting calibration, but they just look nice.

Buy an infared cooking thermo, there small and u just point and click and get a accurate temp within +/-.1°! When i do a wc i get the tank temp and match it at the faceut. And it works at 10 or so feet so i can literally point it at the tank from the couch and get a fast reading. Easy and simple

Before I got my tanks ready, I had the luxury of not having any heaters yet. So, I went with the Fluval E300 heaters in all of my tanks.

For those that don't know, the Fluval E series heaters have an LCD that displays your desired temp and actual temp.

All have been accurate so far. The Fluval E300 (300w) are in stores for $55-$70.

I got mine from an Amazon seller, shipped for $35.82 each. ;-)

Sorry to bring up an older thread, but would you recommend the Fluval E Heaters? I'm switching to discus and am doing a complete overhall on my tank. I want to make sure I get a strong and reliable heater that won't die on me.

Leave it to a man to find a remote control thermometer.
