I am getting a 120 gal (48x24x24) and would like to know what the best for filtration is.

I am using a Rena xp2 on my 45gal and love it. Was thinking of going with an Xp4 for the 120. Is this overkill? Or would a Xp3 work with like a Marineland 200 over top filter?

I like fluval too... as well as marineland.. any suggestions? or am I on the right path?

The fish that are going in the 120 will be all the ones in my 60, plus maybe a couple extra.

1. 7" Tiger Oscar
1. 11" Royal CK
1. 7" Spotless Golden CK
2. 10/11" Senegal Polys.
1. 5" Short bodied albino Senegal Poly
1. 11" Common Pleco
1. 4.5" African Feathered Cat Fish
1. 6.5" BGK

Others I am thinking of adding suggested the aggression stays under control would be a vampire tetra, or maybe another cichlid type... maybe Geo? Possibly a Ray of some kind... hmmm

anyway, let me know what you think. I have an air-pump, but is a powerhead needed? Thanks!

Well, I must be on the right track... lol...

I currently have a Fluval FX5 and AC 110 on my 125. I would recommend the same as I think the two complement each other well. My water stays crystal clear with frequent water changes.

I keep hearing about that combo, Im not sure if I can quite afford the Fx5 just yet, but once I can, I would like to have it for my tank! I have heard about aeration problems with the fx5, and leaking... is this true? or is the aeration why everyone has a AC as well?

thanks a lot! I really appreciate it. :D

Hey dude. I made my own filter with a 20l bucket. Power head feeds to a spray bar. The water then goes through a thin foam layer which is your pre filter. This foam sits on a piece of perforated aluminium. It then falls through bio balls and drains back to the tank. You can buy all the fittings from a plumbing supply shop. All you need to do is drill some holes. Cost $70 AUS. and filters a 6x2 foot with two and a half foot barra, one and a half foot cat fish ect. feeding on prawns, squid ect. no worries.

Theres no need for an fx5 IMO. Since you already have a rena xp2, go ahead and pick up an xp4. That way its easy to but filter media and everything is interchangeable. There is no sense in having two different brands of filters if there's no need. I have a 125g with a xp4 and a whisper 60 with 6 Indo tarpon @ 8'' and 1 Silver dat at 4''. my water stays crystal clear even when I run just the canister. I only turn on the HOB when I'm feeding as there no need to make excess noise for the fish, not to mention the waste of power.

I use to think the same thing. But I found out that my fish prefer when I only run my canister, as the hang on the back style creates a lot vibrations. judt sayin'...
