Ok, so I have about $200 saved up to filter my 40g breeder. I've seen FX5's going on eBay for around there but would this be too much? I have a 4" Rhom, and I don't want him getting sucked into the intake lol. What do you guys think I should go with?

fx5...thats alot of filter for a lil tank! do ittttt

It's fine, just get a good screen for the intake. You can also easily baffle the return to prevent a vortex in there.

I woud only spend the extra money on an FX5 if you are planning on upgrading later or getting a big tank in the future. otherwise, I think it doesn't make sense to spend that much money on such a huge filter for a tank that size. not to mention hydro costs. an FX5 uses 4x the power of a single AC110.

if it were me, I would go for an AC110. even that I think, is way overkill, but these ones always reprime after a power flicker, the smaller AC's often do not. so I stick with the 110 size.

I agree with 12 volt man

If you think you could be (or might be) up-grading to a larger tank in the future, then go for the FX5. You can adjust the flow to suit your tank

If you won't be up-grading your tank and you are sure of that, you could get a fluval 305 for a canister filter or either the AC70 or AC110 for a HOB filter.

How big will the piranha get? If the 40 will hold it for life then an AC110 would be fine, no reason to spend $250 on an FX5.
