looking into filters, what would you recommend

fx5 or sump

I would never recommend the FX5 to anyone unless I wanted them to be miserable for the foreseeable future. :)

I would say a sump is your best bet -- you get total control in terms of flow, media, etc. Have you checked out the DIY forum yet? There are some really crazy DIY sump ideas there, if you chose to go the DIY route.

I go abit overboard when it comes to filtration. I don't beleive in too much filtration. I would go with acouple large backpack filters(one on each far side), Either Peguins or Aquatecs(Made by Marineland at walmart, just as powerful, and half the price) and a Rena XP4 with the intake directly in the middle at the minimium. That way you have filtration and circulation in all areas of the tank.

Well How many oscar do you plan on keeping in this tank? If you are going to get 2, then you should really spend the money on a canister, get one that can turnover 400-500 gallons of water a hour. And I would also recomend using seachem matrix as your filter media. It does extremly well in canister filters. If your going with HOB filters then you should get somthing that can turn over 1000-1200 gallons of water a hour. That is a bit over the minimum recomended requirements, but when it comes to oscars there is no such thing as too much filtration. I like to go with mixing the 2, I would get a powerful canister, like a eheim 2028, and also get a HOB like a ac110. I think AquaClear filters are the best you can get as far as HOB are concerned.

Screw canister and pre manufactured go DIY all the way. My systems sit in the hood, turn the tank over at least 10 times an hour most run on 20 times an hour though. My water is always crystal. the best thing is I filter a 6foot for about $70au.
