any ideas on what the best filter with least amount of care is.
i am building a 180 gal tank and was thinking of using my 75 gal as a wet dry filter would this be a good setup
any thoughts on this subject would be great. oh and by the way i am a dyier at heart so what ever i go with i will prob build

ps. if i go 75gal wet dry what kind of pump should i get???????????

a 75 should be plenty for a 180. only limiting factor is the height of the 75. i tried this on my 180, and the 75 was to tall, very hard to get equipment in and out of the sump to clean, etc....but mine is saltwater, so more equipment in there.

Also you need to check you stand, if it is a stock/off the shelf stand it may not fit in there, but if you made it or are going to make it you can take all of those sizes into consideration.

I ended up changing mine out for a 40 gallon breeder tank, I think it is the same foot print as a 55 and 75, just like 6 inches shorter

Are you planning to drill the wet/dry for the pump? If yes I would recommend a blueline pump, I have had mine for 3.5 years, no problems yet, and it is pretty quiet, and cheaper than iwaki, or little giant. If you are not drilling the tank i would go with a Mag drive pump, like a 9 or 12. these are the best submersible pumps in my opinion. a 12 might be a little large, but I think you are better off putting a ball valve on a pump to slow it down than to have a pump that is under powered. with too little flow overflows can actually be noisier in my experience

High rpm pretty much covered it! I like little giant pumps though:D

so the wet/dry setup is the best

I really think it is. I'm sure there are others that disagree, and it would be nice to get some to tell why. So you can make your own decision that way:)

thanks rallysman you da man, say hows that new fish doing

doing quite well thanks:D

AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME

A wet/dry sump is the best filtration, IMO. It can handle a much higher bioload than most filters, keeps your oxygen levels in the water very high, and you can keep the heater and other equip in the sump, so your tank looks clean(no tubes and wires).
