Im looking to set up 2 - 3 125 + gallon tanks sometime this summer and I'd like to do things right from the start so I wanted to hear people's opinions on the best method for filtering larger tanks. I dont think I'd go over 300 gallons, but I imagine they'd be in a different bracket by then anyways? I would still be interested in how people would go about filtering those.

I've heard a lot of people just use two hob filters, but Im a big fan of the simple sponge filter. Could sponge filters work with enough surface area and sufficient gravel vacuuming?

I know Cannister filters are always another option, but I know they've got some drawbacks and they're unsightly if you don't have the right hideout for the unit.

One concept I only understand very marginally is the wet/dry and sump system which I know is also used in larger tank set ups, how does this work?

Thanks for the help, hopefully some fruitful debate can occur as well :).

well i'd most definately make sure there is room under the stand to hide a canister or wet dry. Sponge and HOB filters work fine, but once you start getting up there in gallonage you really need something better.

I'd personally go with a nice sized wet/dry and a HOB filter for extra mechanical AND maybe even a hydro V sponge filter for just a little extra yet.

its always nice to have extra filtration incase one of them would happen to stop for some reason.
