Best filtration for a 300 gallon

Agreed, you probably want a sump.

A large fluidized/moving bed type setup would be good too.

Or something like an Ultima II 1000 would do the trick.

If you don't want to mess with plumbing, you could run three Fluval FX6, but that would cost $1000 plus media. If you go this route, fill all the baskets with biological media and put mechanical filtration only at the very top (fine floss/pad type thing) and change it every week or two. I'm running dual FX6 on my new 180 setup.

A big sump would be my go to at 300g. If not drilled and don't want to drill then I'd probably look at the FX line of canisters.

Well first off a few bass would need a larger tank, maybe stick to just one of the smaller bass (like a kelberi), but I would first recommend a sump as it dilutes the waste, provides space for biomedia/sponges and gives a place for a heater. If you cannot get a sump, I would then recommend canister filters, eheim and fluval make some good canister filters. You should also consider getting some aquaclear 110s and sponge filters as supplemental filtration.

.....do you have something against overflow boxes?

i would probably run a big canister + 2 aquaclear 110's on a 300.. unless way overstocked that would be plenty....

I should have quoted you as my question was in response to your post.

For folks looking for an overflow, the customaquariums.com "stealthbox" seems like a good option. It's a very flexible design and obviously supports the "bean animal" type approach, which seems to be what everyone does nowadays due to supporting high flow with low noise.
