Best filtration

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
really a matter of opinion. i mean you could hook up huge pool sand filters to it, but realistically the best would be a nice sized wet dry/sump filter....but for a beginner thats a little tricky, so you may want to just got with 2 penquin 400's since they are pretty cheap right now.

forgot to mention that i am currently using the MarineLand Magnum 350 pro, but lately it hasnt been working very well, water turned sort of light green after a couple of days.

I have had several 55-85 gallon tanks with just a single Emp 400. And with the exception of a 65g red belly piranha tank I've never had a problem with water params. What are you planning on stock your 55g with?

Depends on your stocking. For a monster stocking, I'd run one eheim 2217, 1 ac110, and 2 hydro 2's.

well i currently have 2 parrot fish, 3 koi, 1 tri-color shark, 1 iridescent shark, 2 red jewel and 1 pleco

Thats a big bioload. Your water problems are probably a result of overfeeding and too much light. Get a test kit and check your params. I run two Magnum 350's on my 90 gal and have no problems with green water or water quality. I do agree if could have more space for media though.

The setup I suggested will be able to handle a HUGE bio-load, however, your tank will not be able to handle many of those fish for very long. Also, the koi and the tropicals should have different water temps. I'd recommend you seperate the koi out, and the pleco, and iridescent shark will eventually need a bigger tank.

I always liked my AC110's, two of them should suffice.

If you want to go the canister route i suggest you go with a medium canister like an xp3 running along side an ac110 for backup.
