I'm getting my first FH today and I wanted to know what some good things to feed him are to get the best colors and kok growth. When I was raising oscars and JDs I fed them hikari cichlid gold every night as a staple food and then varied their morning feedings between, spiralina brine shrimp, live mealworms, live crickets, krill, peas, bloodworms, shrimp pellets, hikari sinking carnivore pellets, and occasionally live convict fry. I have a lot of these foods still (except for the live stuff) but are these food good for the grow out of a juvi FH? What food stuffs should I be feeding for the best growth, color, and kok?

ebay ching mix, although i dont have a FH anymore, the food has brought my convicts kok out dramatically, hes a stunning convict, so i imagine that it would be fantastic for a nice colorful flowehorn

LMAO. Why would any one pay for overpriced crap? Chingmix, grandsumo, Hai Feng, etc is all a marketing gimmick. Your FH won't grow a kok just because its fed Chingmix, it grows one because the genetics are there. Besides, the ingredients put into all these magic unicorn Flowerhorn food are crap. The nutritional value of these pellets are not meant for FH's or any of SA/CA cichlid. Plus, one of the main reasons FH die prematurely are because of food(FH foods have wayyy too much fat and protein). Genetics being the main one. Also, some FH foods are known to contain synthetic hormones. I don't know which but there have been some speculations on Chingmix. Do yourself a favor and invest in a quality pellet.. Hell even Hikari Cichlid Gold is better than Chingmix imo. However, all I feed my fish is NLS. With my water changing regimen and quality pellet, I have not experienced any major problems with my hybrids or my other fish. Do yourself a favor, if you really want to lose a fish in about say 1-2years, keep going with the route you want to go.
Then you should know how hard it is to get the proper nutrition for your saltwater fish. And indeed, I only use NLS. I only feed bw, krill, brine shrimp to my baby FH's that are less than an half inch. After that I mix it up with NLS growth formula(0.5mm) and start weening them away from the frozen food. Once they get bigger than 3", I feed them nothing but NLS pellets. I change the pellet size as they age. If this is your first time keeping a FH, I hope you consider the fact that FH's are very weak genetically and are very prone to hex(AKA White stringy poop) and other diseases. They can come down with the disease at any time even if proper nutrition and water needs are met.
Do you use NLS "cichlid specific" pellets or just the generic medium, large, XL pellets
Well for my Aro's, I use NLS jumbo fish formula. My Datnoids and Polypterus, the cichlid formula. I've used the jumbo fish formula for FH's before but only for 12" ones, they had a bit of a problem breaking those so I downgraded to the cichlid formula(3mm). Thera A is a formula I find to be okay with raising young FH's since it does have a little bit more protein and fat than the other formulas. Not too sure about the fat though so don't quote me on that.
