I know it's very small. I'm just wondering if there's any cichlids I could keep in one?
I know some of the smaller tanganyikas would be fine as a pair/trio in a 10 but I'm just wondering if anything could fit in a 5 in case one of my plant experiments doesn't work out.

If not I do have bigger tanks available I would just like to find a possible use for this tank.

electric yellow cichlid may go okay in a 5. I think a 10 is better.

Noooo Way!!^^^ An electric lab will outgrow a 5 gallon tank in no time, and it would be too stressful. The only African you might safely be able to keep in a 5 gallon would be a smaller tang cichlid

personally, I would recommend some rams for your tank. They come in a couple variants and have awesome personalities. I set my spare 10 gal up with live plants and some rams and tetrass and its been awesome

Try some Pea Puffers, you should be alright.

although not cichlid, its still cool. Soon they will be unavailable.

Why will they be unavailable?
Elec Yellows are definetly out
Rams would be nice but I already did a SA biotypeish set up so I'm looking to switch continents, africa's the only one I haven't done yet.

You think Neolamprologus similis would fit?

No. Despite their size, shellies can be rough to each other and tank mates if they don't have enough room. 10 gallon minimum and in that case, go with L. multifaciatus, not similis.

This is the smallest Tang there is and 5 is still too small.

Forget about any Malawi fish. 20L would be the smallest tank I'd go with for them and it would have to be a group of dwarf peacocks, 1M/3F, A. maylandi or A. kandeense.

I know that isn't what you want to hear, but believe me. I say use the 5 for a fry growout tank. :)

Thanks for the info! I'd rather be told what's right not "what I want to hear". I think more people would benefit from it so that's my motto.

p.s. my plant experiment's working anyway so I probably won't be switching this to fish anytime soon. But thanks for everyone's help!
