what would be the best gar for a 250gal? that i could have that wont get to big and not eat my other fish?

gars with those cichlids are generally not a good idea either way...the gars are not aggressive fishes (only at feeding time for the most part) and those cichs (esp the red devil and the jag) will most likely bully the gar and probably hog the food too. the combination is generally not advised.

that being said, given your tank size (what are the dimensions?) a shortnose gar is probably best, provided it had appropriate tankmates (similarly sized fishes which are not aggressive). this is the smallest species of gar, and depending on the width of the tank, could feasibly live in that tank for life, or at least a very long time. spotted and Florida gars could also live in a 250g for a decent (albeit shorter than the shortnose) amount of time too. keep in mind, with the tankmate issue, that shortnose gars are probably the most skittish species, so attempting the combo increases the probability of a 'broken back' collision due to startling, and therefore having to euthanize the fish.

hope that helps--
