best gravel for bichirs

i know they need fine gravel but do the colors of the gravel affect the bichirs in any way?

yes they do affect them, but sand is much better.

Place them in a red or tan substrates and they will turn out awesome with high contrast patterns.

Here is a quote from King-eL. He keeps many bichirs, so I'd go with this idea.

Red or tan or a mixture but definitely sand whatever the colour but i like the look of mine on my dark grey sand.

I have never used it personally. I use Lowes All Purpose Sand, it is light tan colored in the tank. The pictures I have seen of Pool filter sand as a substrate either looks light tan like mine and some even looked whitish... I think it depends on lighting too how the sand will look.

I use sand from walmart, cheap, spend about two hours cleaning it, looks great.

Yup, pretty much same thing. Mine looked like that, it was also called "All purpose sand".
