+1

Try a canister filter, only the intake and output hose are in the tank, even hob aren't in the filter.

Actually, I'm trying to save space outside the tank. So, something like a sponge filter, or one of those fully submersible filters. The problem I have right now is that I have canisters, and no space to put them. And the stock of these tanks don't need the filtration power of the canisters i have.

Then this is key, but the sf needs to have bb to keep the tank cycled, unless this is a new tank you can just drop it in wait a few weeks and it will be good.

i use a sponge in all my tanks as backup.i have a fluval U-series,in-tank.petblow sells them.online it's cheaper.has adjustable output,i like it

have had a fluval u4 in the past. seems to work ok. good flow. might seem a bit large in a 55g?

sponge filter... ati hydro 4or 5 with an aqua clear or penguin powerhead.. is probably your best bet... for a 55 I would do an ac70 p.h. and stack 2 hydro 4 filters on it... so you can clean them seperatly to save B.B.
