I currently have black sand in my tank, and I want to try something different. The black sand makes several of my fish appear very dark to almost black. I have severums, jack dempseys, salvini, blood parrots, and an oscar in the tank. any suggestions?

I use pool filter sand. It is cheap and looks good. You can usually get a 50 pound bag from a pool supply store for about 10 bucks. It is a fairly large grain sand, very clean right out of the bag, and a good neutral color.

Try a nice natural colored sand. By "natural" I mean what you would generally see on a typical sandy river bottom (I'm aware some parts of the world have different colored sand). Something with a tan base with bits of black and brown.

^^^^^ Look no further. Syphon friendly, natural looking and cheap.
In contrast to black substrate, light colored substrate can take the color to the opposite extreme and make your fish look washed out. Mixing in different shades of sand together with a bit of fine gravel can give you great color and texture as well.

Lol, im sure if mr. Clockwork saw me with that stuff in a big cichlid display, he'd personally come to my house and strangle me.
Haha I could see quite a few more people doing the same, another alternative is turface proleage natural, its clay based and looks amazing under water, never had gravel vac issues and my fis coloration is beautiful although better with black, most bright colored fish are though. I get turface for $12 for 2 cubic feet, which is ALOT, in weight it is 50 lbs,
