Right now I'm running a 48'' ZooMed 50/50 reef/sun bulb for my GT that I'm pretty happy with after being dissappointed by a Coral Life color max. What kind of light do you fishkeepers have over your cichlids? Want to know who puts out the best.
I've noticed that SA cichlids put off the best colors for me under 6500K, brand makes no difference. Africans on the other hand put off the best color with more of a blue spectrum, not so much actinic, as 10,000K, and then marines definately put off their best colors at a mix of 10,000k and actinic mix, or reef sun 50/50. For the most part, just do what you like, your the one who looks at them everyday. If it were up to the fish, they would prefer little to no light. A dimmer light just makes them feel more comfortable, which can end up making them show their best colors!!!!!
Also keep in mind that substrate also has alot to do with lighting. Also the natural color of the fish. Play with these till you find the perfect blend.
I gotta agree. My fish are ALWAYS more active with the light off, and they really do seem more comfortable. I still use the Aquaglo lights, so I can see them. I think they are around 14,000k or so.
i use a 10,000K bulb which i think looks really well with my red devil flower horn hybrid. to be perfectly honest i think it depends on the color schemes of fish wether they are dark tone or brights or combos of the two...
