I hate my lighting so I'm going to be changing over to what everyone recommends.

I love NAN lighting...brings out the red in all your fish

8000-10000k like the Colormax

i've always been a fan of pretty much any powercompact lighting that offfers 65-96k worth of light, i run 2 of them on my planted tanks.

You mean wattage don't you (65-96w)? You don't really need a lot of power (brightness) to make fish look good IMO it's more color temperature.

i like the aqua glow or the power glow lights that you can get at almost any pet shot

I agree!! Those bulbs bring out both the blues and the reds/yellows/oranges very very nicely! Perfect for GT's :D

They're the lights that give fish stores that characteristic purple glow.

Another lighting technique to remember is that fish look best with light hitting them from an angle, rather than right above them, which is why GT's particularly look sharp when they're close the the front glass, and the light is bouncing off the front of the tank, hitting them on the sides. Their irridescent pattern really pops.

I keep a single strip towards the front of my tank for that purpose.
