Best lighting that simulates sunlight

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
There is no replacement for natural sunlight. Sometimes it's filtered sometimes it's not. Sometimes, depending on the time of year the k temp changes. Plants and fish in your aquarium will always be "stunted" whether it's size and spread of plants, or color of fish. That being said, if you want the best lighting available in private aquaria, look at systems for growing coral. They will be expensive, but they will be the best alternative to the sun.

id disagree if you want something natural t5 around 6500k is close, reef lighting is more around 10000k-20000k will give you a very bright white/blueish light. some leds are coming out in the rightspectrum like kessil makes an "amazon sun" version of their a150w led cannon. also sunlight can work well if near a window or there are tubes to transfer sunlight to areas away from a skylight or something. id find a link but im on a phone and its tough.

T5 is never a good representation of sunlight. It lacks the sparkle that sunlight has. Both LED and Metal Halide will provide it though.

The bulbs that are 10-20k are not for reef growing. They are for reef showing. Way different. Your lfs may use high k bulbs to make coral look more vibrant, but they are not growing. There is no substitute for sunlight. If you don't believe me, try a simple experiment. Put a tank under the most expensive plant growing lights you can buy, and put a tank under direct sunlight. Youll find out quickly that it's impossible to recreate the sun.
