I just got a baby (2 inch) bichir and I want to be able to feed it live food that I can raise. The tank used to raise food would be a 10 gallon. Can anyone give me ideas? I've heard that feeder guppies could do well, but their longer gestation period is kind of a turn off. I've heard that convict cichlids spawn every 2 weeks or so, but I'm worried that tank size may be an issue. All input is appreciated.

Try eartworms and crickets.

livebearers pop out babies faster than convicts, and you can put in more than a pair in a 10g

I have a breeding pair of platys in a 2.5, I know, it's not very big, but they were meat where they were before now, now they make meat for my bichir, jack dempseys, jurupari, tiger barbs, clawed frogs, etc. Get a male and a couple of females, make that when you remove fry, you remove all the fry as they will rapidly overstock the tank. Your bichir will be happy. I also feed mine beefheart, bloodworms, cichlid sticks, shrimp pellets, and anything else I can sink to him.

I thought platys were supposed to have long gestation periods? Up to 28 days just like guppies? I'm kind of looking for breeding machines that just pop out moving snacks.. anyone else have any advice?

most likely not going to work like you want it. :irked:
jewel cichlids breed like crazy.check out my jewel fry thread in the photo section.
but by the time you breed them, raise them to an ok size, then feed a few, your back to square one.
and all that wont keep up with a growing bichir.
i feed my bichirs fathead minnows,or rosys.at least a dozen a week each.
sorry to be a downer but ive tried it and it just dont keep up unless you have lots of room and lots of breeders.best to just buy bait fish or feeders.

Thanks midnight. I just wanted enough to feed him once or twice a week. If not, I was going to get him large enough to take squid and market shrimp- cheap in bulk!

You probably wont raise any fry like you think from cons. And you will be replacing male or female once they mature as they will likely start killing one another... Guppies are longer but Grow to maturity pretty fast... Live feeders are hard depending on how much you want to feed... And really require more work in allot of cases than the fish yiou are feeding!!! :)
