Best look for cichlids

Agree with David R, that it is all subjective.
I also use a black background most of the time, but I do have 1 tank where the back was painted blue. To me the blue (at least this blue) looks unnatural.

And as a scuba diver myself, unless I am in open ocean or deep fresh water, what I see is normally dark brown, dark green or black.

And if the background is dark, a sand substrate has less chance of washing out colors.
The tank below has a light colored pool filter sand/aragonite sand substrate.

hey man i uses black background and black gravel works great for bringing out color of fish, just find black gravel a nightmare to clean, everything pops out against the black so fish poo and other stuff does too

Yeah, it depends on the fish. For my gravel/background I went black sand/black with my first tank, and natural/blue for my second.

I will say for sure that my firemouth/convict colored up in a night/day difference when I went from sand to black sand.

Here are the differences in mine; excuse the floating plant and zucchini this is just before a water change!

depends entirely on the species of fish. I prefer black and a more natural coloured substrate, but each to their own.

+1 and...

I'm still kicking myself for the choice of white sand and blue background on my first tank. Only still have it there because of a breeding pair and it works for them.
