I should have also mentioned that there are a number of positive reviews for Beamswork brand LED lights and the Satellite LED+ lights. The Satellite LED+ lights include a number of extra features that are nice, but not at all necessary (like simulated lightning, cloud cover, etc.). One feature that I am currently looking for, or will build into mine if I decide to go DIY is sunrise/sunset. I like the idea of the lights turning on gradually rather than all of a sudden DAYLIGHT! My fish always seem to scatter when the lights come on, because it's so bright so fast (or at least that's my guess, can't read their minds unfortunately).
Secondly, lighting for freshwater (unless you keep plants) is your personal preference. Lights are for people to see the fish, and some even argue that no light is better for the fish (I'm not sure it makes a difference assuming the lights aren't overly bright and the fish have hiding places). Your personal preference also controls what color temperature you like. Some like to have a bit more blue, or cooler lighting, because it supposedly helps the blues on their mbuna "pop." Others like more natural lighting, something that matches sunlight. Again this is your personal preference, but may also be controlled by what species of mbuna you choose to keep.
I'm sure this isn't what you exactly wanted to hear, but if you really don't know it may be better to pay a bit more for a system like the Satellite LED+ system (there's other brands as well), where you can control the lighting temperature using the remote. You can make it more blue, orange, green, whatever, or basically just sunlight. Then when you set up your other tanks (because you eventually will if you don't have more than one already) you will know what you like - and can then get something that doesn't allow such flexibility. You lose the features to play with, but save some money overall.
If you couldn't tell, I am also in the market for new lights and actually also keep African cichlids - mostly mbuna. I am almost positive I will be going LED, but I have a few decisions to make. I currently have T5-HO fluorescent lighting and the lights are quite blue (use to be on a reef tank). Originally I really liked this as it did make the blues in my afra and even the purple/blue in my rusties pop, but as time has gone on I think I like something that is more natural, closer to sunlight. In reality, I would love the flexibility of the satellite LED+, but I'm not sure I will spend the extra $75 to upgrade from the "regular" Beamswork (your cost difference might be different depending on the size tank, and therefore light).
