what does everyone think is the best filter out there for mechanical filtration ? just looking for personal experiences and opinions.
thanx in advance.

A power head with a sponge on the intake has done the best for me.

AC110 high flow rate and very easy to clean once a week, best to get the crap out of the water column, quick as possible.

"The Best" would depend on a lot of factors... a pool filter is one heck of a filter but is enormous and expensive...

Pressurized Pond Filters work great but again are oversized for many inhome aquariums...

I like the AC HOB series... and for many set ups they may be 'the best'...

...but it all depends on what you are filtering and if money is a concern...

I think canisters are the best for mechanical but it depends on how you set it up. I guess for simplicity you can't beat the AC110, it's really hard not get great mechanical with one of those.

The best would be a vortex diatom filter.I use them for occasional clarifying in my tanks.

And the winner is......^^^^^^^

Pond filters don't polish the water, Pool filters (cartridge & sand) can be large but are costly to run.

HOB's are limited by flow.

Canisters can have polishing pads so that's a plus (some are difficult to clean out tho).

Sumps & W/Ds can be set up to rival Diatoms...almost.

But diatoms have their problems too, they work so well that they clog up very quickly (their suppose too). So they are usually just used for final polishing of the water before returning it to the tank.

eheim classics, as a practical constant running alternative to a diatom. very easy to set up i found and from what ive seen it shouldnt be hard to maintain it either. zero bypass in a classic due to its bucket design, in at the bottom out at the top, doesnt get simpler.

yup, i think floss in sump works great. you can get a big bag from walmart (crafts section) for a few bucks.

aside from that, diatom filter is #1
