I've got an Eheim 2262 coming this weekend, and I have to decide what to stock it with. Ultimately it'd be nice if it was cheap, but I've worked out a deal with my LFS where they're including some media in the price of the filter. I'm sure they won't fill the whole thing with those expensive ceramic rings without me paying a little, but they'll help out within reason I'm sure.

So I was thinking about putting in a bunch of small pieces of lava rock, at least for part of it. Like maybe a layer of them inbetween some ceramics, or something. Lava seems good for mechanical and (I think?) pretty good for bio too. Or would lace rock be better? (I suppose the PH upping properties might be a slight bonus in that case.)

Any thoughts are welcome. Thanks in advance for your advice!

I would advise against using lava rock. It has a tendency to fragment off small pieces which can kill a filter impeller in no short order. Fill it with what you can and save up for decent media. You could always fill it will scrubbies if your low on cash. If it were my filter it would be chocked full of substrat pro. Expensive filter deserves expensive media but it isn't exactly needed. Your preference really..

Oh man this was exactly what I needed to hear. Thanks for saving me from a potentially destructive decision! I guess it'll come down to how generous the LFS feels this weekend. They love me so I'm feeling lucky.

Good luck Ben, let us know what happens. Eheim media isn't cheap for you or them so I'm not surprised they aren't offering to fill the whole thing.

All of mine are filled to the top with eheim ehfisubstrat pro other than the coarse sponges up top and bottom.
I plan to fill the next one with Seachem Pond matrix

got my 2262 filled with 3 liters ehfimech,3 liters ehfifix then 4liters eheim sub, 5liters of pro and whatever space is left which aint much with pillow filter floss works well not a fan of the ehfix not sure if it even does anything but seperate the media..... Just set up a used 2260 filled it with 5 liters ehfimech and ordered 12 liters of seachem matrix from big als pretty cheap in comparison to eheims media but could only fit like 10liters of it in and couldnt put any floss on top. I would say go with 5 Liters Ehfimech, 8 to 9 Liters of Seachem Matrix and some pillow matting (filter floss) on top not too expensive but effective, if you got the cash fill with 3 liters of Ehfimech and the rest with eheim substrate pro and a little bit of floss on top...OR... Just go with what Eheim reccomends lol.....

I have all if mine packed with a mixture if Eheim pro and bio mech, plus sponge in the top, I would use the big Eheim net media bags, makes it so much easier at cleaning time plus no chance of small bits of media getting sucked up in to the pump

I would go with seachem matrix or the eheim media, honestly little difference apart from the price but seachem and other sites claim its the best media out I really dont mind personally what ever is cheapest I normally get sometimes the eheims on sale sometimes seachem is. cant go wrong if u chose one of the 2 to sum it up.

+1 for the large eheim bags, was gonna use a large 5 dollar mesh sports bag lol but not sure if it would foul water parameters, maybe you op could look into it if cash is low and share your experience with the rest of us later in another thread.
