I have a large rhom (about 10in) that I will need to move soon. The plan is to transport him in a 5 gallon bucket to his new home, but first I have to catch him. All other times I put the bucket in the tank and tried to force him in the bucket. This is a pain so I am wondering if there was a better way. I read somewhere about using a wet towel or tshirt to catch them and them place them into the bucket.

Any thoughts?

Lay the bucket in the tank. Unplug the heater and drain the water to a depth that is just the fishs height; Once the water cools to around 70 the fish should be docile enough to lead it into the bucket. It may actually go in on its own as the water drains.

I have a 14" that will need to be moved soon & I will be doing the same; just with a bigger bucket.

for big dangerous fish always do what rhom does, or use a fishing net. there are many fishing nets available specifically made for large dangerous fish without getting spines or hooks caught up in it, and without hurting the fish. a good 18" reinforced rubber net will run you around 30 bucks though.

i would stay away from the towel method though, fish that can take fingers off no problem shouldn't be handled. things happen.
