what is the best thing to use to remove excess silicone from the rim of a tank?

Ummmmm...... A butcher knife? Lol JK a good old razor blade. :D

razor blade
but make sure you have new fresh razor blades, this will help a lot. It also helps to replace the blade when it gets dull. (you can tell when it needs to be changed) I used a new one every 5 minutes when i was resealing my 75 gallon haha

razor blade for thick stuff, then gasoline on a rag to remove the residue

I just picked up some stuff to remove glue/silcone etc call Pro Strength De-Solv-It
Contractors Solvent

It is a natural based product, can be safely used on acrylic (I needed to take sticky letters off acrylic) Let it sit for 30 min-1 hr and all the glue just wiped off.

Supposed to work really well for silcone as well

so yes, razor blade for most of it, and something like De-Solv-it for the residue
