Ive been trying to get fish to breed for a while now and my texas cichlids are cleaning off stuff, dancing around each other, and defending one spot from the rest of the fish in the tank, but i am worried because my buttikafari is running them off from there "spot". the butti is still lsomewhat a juvinile but idk if i should take him out and put him in a ten untill the breeding is over and the fry have hatched. A little help please?

I know this gets said a lot, but based on your tank setup, your most serious problem is that you have way too many fish in your 55G tank

* 4 Texas cichlids - - a 55G can maybe handle 1 small Texan
* 1 Jack Dempsey - - a 55G can handle 1 JD by itself, maybe a pair
* 1 electric yellow - - ok, so an African slipped in, that is not a big deal
* 1 Red Terror - - this is nuts, too big for your tank, sure to be trouble
* 1 Green Terror - - a 55G would be OK for the GT, by itself
* 1 Buttikoferi - - another bad idea, the 55G is way too small, and the butti will cause too much trouble

so, bottom line is that in my opinion your set-up is the problem and you will never make this work . . . I would strongly encourage you to either get many more tanks, or take just about all of your fish back to the LFS

if I have not accurately described your tank setup, let me know . . .

they could kill the other fish because they are protecting the egg and babies.

fair enough, but they are still an unstable mix, and yet you are trying to get the Texas cichlids to breed?

I guess I just don't get what you want out of this . . .

for example;
I have a pair of Managuensis, with spawn in a properly filtered 225g.
I would no way introduce any other fish in this set-up.
Just the tenacity of my pair in captivity, with fry, scares me enough to not put my bare skin anywhere near the surface of the water. I can only imagine what kind of stress they would have if another fish was to invade their spawn.
And I'm sure they would defend it with their life...
