My tank is Undrilled and I will not drill it so I'm going to use hang on overflows. I'm wondering if I should get two rated for 600 or one for 1100 gph? It's mainly a question of is it better to have one point of intake or multiples. Both have 2x 1" bulkhead fittings built into them for intake lines to the sump. Any thoughts? Also if I painted them black with an epoxy sealant so they blended in with the tank background would that cause any problems? I would just paint the outside of them that was showing from the front in the tank so it should restrict water flow.

I vote multiples. That way, if one gets clogged, you still have one and don't have to deal with a potential mess. Or not as much of one anyway...

At least 100 of them. Maybe more. :D

You should search youtube for diy hang on back pvc overflows...you could make them out of whatever size pvc you wanted and make 3 of them for under $50

But like everyone is saying...the more redundancy the better protected you are incase of a clog, mishap or what have you

2 would be good. Why don't you want to drill the tank, then there will never be an issue of the overflows losing siphon

Please explain how you've got yours setup^^^ I am looking at a mag drive 12 with my head pressure It would have Around 900 or so gph so I figure an overflow system that is around 1000 with some 90' turns and the sump baffles should slow it down to about 900 correct me if I'm wrong. Does anybody know any reliable ways to go about calculating flow rates for sumps with over flows and pumps? I can't drill the tank because I can't afford to chance it cracking and trying to drill some holes in a $350 tank when I can just buy some devices to do the same thing for 1/3 the price is just silly.

I just have a standard Eshopps overflow box that has two tubes & a QuietOne pump; I don't remember the specific model numbers & such off the top of my head.

Your baffles & such in the sump are not going to have a major effect (if any effect at all) on the flow rate depending on how far apart the baffles are set & other factors. You really have to think of this thing like a series of pipes; every pipe has a maximum flow rate & the same thing applies for the sump. What are the dimensions of the sump, and how do you have the baffles in there (with measurements)?

IMO, if you can find a place that will guarantee their drilling & will replace the aquarium if they break it, then get the aquarium drilled if it's cheaper than buying the overflow box. It's way easier to just have a drilled aquarium instead of one with an overflow box or two.
