On a boat!
So, my rays are all eating pellets. Basically, any and all pellets that are fed. So, now I'm stuck between feeding high-dollar, brand-named food or a cheaper variant, or a combo of both. Currently, I'm using T1's advice and feeding a combo of Hikari Sturgeon, Hikari Carnivore, and Hikari Cichlid Gold (also adding some NLS pellets). I'm looking to feed the best, most economical food to my babies.

Here's what I've come up with....

Hikari Sturgeon - 4.4 lb -> $58 = $13.18 per lb
Hikari Carnivore - 2.2 lb -> $50 = $22.73 per lb
Hikari Massivore - 2.2 lb -> $43 = $19.55 per lb
Hikari Cichlid Gold - 2.2 lb -> $15 = $6.82 per lb
NLS Thera A Jumbo - 2240g -> $55 = $11.16 per lb
NLS Mega - 1875g -> $50 = $12.11 per lb

As you can see, the Hikari Cichlid Gold is the cheapest (by far), followed by NLS and Hikari Sturgeon. I've always heard great things about both Hikari and NLS, but I'm open to other pellets if they have great ingredients and proven quality.

For now, I will continue using Hikari products as my base (Cichlid Gold, Sturgeon, and Carnivore), but will start adding more NLS due to it's better ingredients and overall variety. Hikari carnivore seems to be nearly identical to massivore (just smaller), so I will try to use this to keep the rays used to eating smaller pellets.

I've used a variety of Ken's in the past and may begin incorporating these back into the mix.

I know this topic has been discussed somewhat in the past, but I'm wondering what is everyone using these days and why? My goal is to save money, but not to the extent of exposing my rays to a bad, "filler-type" food.

Thanks MFKers!!!!!

pellet mix is the best....
I also add prawns and muscle to mix it uo but its pellet mix as staple.
I mix
massive.. cichlids gold.. and sturgeon .

I might try some other pellets like NLS though and add that to mix

I also feed market shrimp, a variety of frozen fish from the asian market, gel food, earthworms, superworms, etc, on a weekly basis or better, but I, too, use pellets as the staple.

I'm thinking I will add NLS Thera-A Jumbo sinking to the mix and maybe Ken's earthworm pellet, as well. These are both cheaper than the Hikari Carnivore and Massivore products and will add even more pellet variety. I will continue to use Carnivore, but in smaller quantities.

Those are some expensive pellets, how much do you burn through in a week qith how many rays?

I just feed mine live fish, chicken hearts and market prawn, costs me around 15$ a month for 2 10" rays

Ken's premium earthworm sticks - 5 lb -> $48.50 = $9.70 per lb
Ken's premium krill pellet 6mm - 5 lb -> $27.00 = $5.40 per lb

Feeding live is not a good practice with the possibility of introducing pathogens. Plus, that gets expensive and isn't as varied as a good pellet food. Chicken heart doesn't sound like a good food to feed rays, either. Market prawn is a good bet, but you'll need variety (other than farm animals and live feeders though, lol).

I give them live snails when there's a bloom in my other tanks, since my rays are not too keen to eat pellets, tried but breaks my heart to see them not eat :)

I feed massivore and try to mix NLS pellets. nls mostly gets passed over but mouthed at times Massivore they eat alright. I also feed talapia and raw prawns. 7 rays lots of food but the kilo of massivore lasts a good long while.

Thanks for this! I haven't seen it broken down by price like this before. I knew NLS was substantially cheaper, but I have never sat down and done the math.
