Hi all
Setting up a sump for one of my tanks (150L)
Before the tank was moved i had run the sump but used an overflow box i have
Didnt reset up sump when moved tank as i hate the overflow box, water level sat too low + a horrible great thing hanging over the back, not nice

So ill be drilling the tank to get round this problem
What can i do to make sure the overflow is silent?

Also would i be best drilling the hole in the bottem + having the pipe coming up like some ive seen or drilling the tank at back or side + having pipe outside of the tank?

Just want it to be as silent as poss
Cheers
James

Hi James,
I need to go take some pictures, but for now, go on eBay and look for some pvc gate valves (not ball valves).
I'll be right back.

I need to make a thread about this tank so I don't have to keep taking pictures of it. Anyway, in this picture notice the three pipes in the tank. The center one is taller than the outer two.

Here's a close up of the stand pipes. The outer pipes have the strainers because they have most of the flow through them. The center pipe has barely a trickle. This is the key to a totally silent system.

And this is the plumbing in the stand. I used ball valves but they are a total pain in my arse to adjust. The ball valves were $5US and the gate valves were $15US. I installed one on my silent overflow already and am in love with it. It makes the adjustments really easy and precise.

The center pipe is hard to see because it is behind the algae scrubber, but it is a straight through pipe without a valve. It terminates below the water in the sump so that there isn't any trickling.

By the way, you'll want at least one inch plumbing. So look for one inch gate valves.

Wow thanks for the replies + pics chompers
Pics say 1000 words

So the reason it is silent is because the valves on each side down pipe keeps the pipe full of water meaning there is no gargling or air being pulled down + just a nice steady flow like a drain on a sink?

I managed to find these http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1-5-VALTERRA-...den_PondsWaterFeatures_UK?hash=item5882c00740 but only in 1.5"
Or these http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1-PVC-PLAIN-G...den_PondsWaterFeatures_UK?hash=item2a03ba0857 in 1", 1.5", 2" etc

Which would be better?

Ive got quite a limited space under my tank so im thinking one side down through bottom of tank, into valve then straight into start of sump + the other side down through tank, 90 degree bend, valve then onto an algae scrubber at the beginning on sump?

Cheers
James
