I am resealing a tank and installing a 3D background and need some silicone (clear for the tank, black for the background). In the past I have used Dow Corning 100% Silicone or GE Silicone I. These are pretty much the only locally available options and they don't come in black (or at least they don't carry it at anyplace near that I know of).

I have read that there are better quality choices out there, but am wondering where to get them. If you have a good online source for quality silicone, please post a link!

Thanks!

I usually get my industrial stuff from mcmaster.com. they have more silicone choices than you could ever want.

Thanks for the reply, I kind of thought that they would be best. I am going to go with the Dow Corning 732.

Dan, I haven't found any benefit to using black silicone for 3D backgrounds, other than it's actually a lot more obvious if you mess up.

Good to know, I may not bother buying it then... I was thinking Justin used a bunch of it on his first install, but it has been a while since I read the thread...

Yes, I used it on my 125 as well. Literally no benefit appearance wise IMO and actually started leaching out toxins (don't use GEII if you do go black lol). Just go GE I clear.

Thanks for posting this.. I was just about to. Ditch the black Dan. Don't use pond foam if you are using it with acrylic, only glass and it will seperate if the BG floats (like the selvas piece you have). The only way I would recomment using pond foam to install the background is it the BG is snug to the top and botton of the tank. Drop me a text if you want. Both Jeff and I have installed a boat load of these so we know what has worked and what has failed pretty well.
