I am in the process of building a 240 gallon tank and plan on using a 70 gallonish sump for the filtration .. I have never dealt with overflows and sumps before so I probably will have more questions down the road .. from the info I have gathered the tanks are normally drilled along the top or thru the bottom .. main benefit I can see from bottom placement is I can put the tank right against the wall opposed to 3-4" away .. is one better then the other or is it just personal preference? .. and pictures would help on how to construct the boxes to regulate water height or any pipe layouts that use the filter screens .. thanks for any info

I think it mostly fall to personal preference. Some tend to go higher as to not have sand get into the overflows and to not see the PVC in the tank.

It's up to you. In the end you can drill a tank where ever you really want as long as you have the right sized inlets and outlets. and the proper pumps to go with them.
