Hey MFKers,

Ive been looking to purchase a bigger tank now for a while and was just wondering where you think its bests to buy. Obviously a deal on here or craigslist is ideal where we can pick it up but I haven't found any of those lately.

For smaller tanks Id say that dollar per gallon deals are killer.

Do LFS usually compete with the prices online? If not what websites do you like to order from?

How big of a tank? Realistically, you're not buying one of those online... at least not glass, unless your going through one of the reputable suppliers of Glass Cages.

If going new, shop around. I've heard of troubles with Perfecto/Marineland tanks, which is one of the reasons I've been a fan of the Aqeon/All Glass Aquariums.

Check your LFS. my go to spot hooked me up with an Aqueon (aga) 90g reef ready tank for $300. Brand new. They just quoted me $80 for a brand new 40 breeder.

I got 2 75g petsmart topfin tanks for cheap. Both were all in one kits (lights, tops, tank) one was $199 on sale. The other I paid $117 for because the light was missing. I know the 125g "ensamble" often goes on sale for under $500 which includes the tank, stand, tops, and lights. Top fin tanks are decent private labels made by aqueon. They aren't as pretty but I don't feel bad about their structural integrity in the least.

At this point in my life I'm done paying for used tanks. I can normally find new tanks for comparable to what the crazy people on craigslist want for old junk. I'll pay $100-200 more for a brand new 180g. Used they go for close to $500 and my lfs can order one for around $650. So its worth the piece of mind to me.

Unless you're looking for a crazy large custom tank I'd stick with the local fish store. Spend your money in the county you live in and support a small business.

Or find one used. It requires patience. Don't settle for the first tank you look at. I've done that, its ok to say no.

(Edit- don't be shocked at the lfs if a price goes up exponentially from one size to the next, for example a 75g may have 1/4" glass and a 90g while being the same footprint has 3/8" glass, chances are you aren't being ripped off. The guys at my shop are great and can tell me what thickness the panes are, which ones are tempered, even offer ugly fake wood trim haha, etc. You wont get that at a big box store)

Ive been looking for a tank with a deeper foot print. Something like a 65 for example. Probably get a 120 or 180 down the road with a 2 foot deep foot print.
