hornwort? Im just guessing as I have no experience with sumps but hornwort is nearly impossible to kill.

Water wisteria has always been my favorite plant. It doesn't need much light, and it really helps with the water quality

The idea of the lucky baboo is to just submerge the roots.Emersed plants are going to do a better job of reducing nitrates. As for submerged plants hornwort or najas will grow the fastest soaking up the most nutrients, but sometimes fall apart which would be a disaster.Java moss is pretty safe but doesnt grow as fast

There is your answer. Ivy does really well if you clean the roots, and place them in the sump. The leaves will continue to grow outward, and will actually export the nutrients from the tank.
