I'm a new fish keeper, so forgive me if this is a silly question. All I've ever kept in the past was bettas and frogs. We recently bought a 100gal set up and have 1 baby Oscar (4in long). We tried putting a common pleco of about the same size in the tank and the Oscar harrassed the pleco who eventually died. I love plecos and I'd really like to have one. What size/type would be best? I'm also considering a 2nd Oscar for the tank. Is that going to overwhelm a tank of that size?

first things first a single may need a larger tank as it reaches maturity but it may be ok but as for plecos a common pleco double the size of the oscar should be fine but bigger is better

my friend has a golden nugget pleco with his oscar and is doing fine
does the common you had got hiding spots like caves and driftwood to retreat to when being harrased? my friends golden nugget is doing ok because he has lots of driftwood in his tank for retreat

He had a little cover but not a lot. The tank was brand new and didn't have much in it at the time. I'm not certain the Oscar killed him but I saw him chasing him often.

Get lots of driftwood and hiding spots and you will have alot of plecos to choose from.
Feed the pleco. And feed the oscar. Find out what they both eat and support both their needs.

That could be a possibility. I know I saw the oscar swimming around the tank s few times with the algae wafer in his mouth. Any advice on how to avoid this if I get another one?

Get a sailfin pleco. They are fairly easy to get, are tough as nails, look nice, and get big enough to show oscars who is really in charge if it has to.

Albino sailfins are pretty easy to get as well. They can be more striking than their standard counterparts. Neither color variation is ugly.

My sailfin pushes the aggressive oscars aside at feeding time if he wants to. The big guy isn't going to starve because of some greedy other fish.

Pleco death can happen at anytime... it could be that you didnt feed your oscar enough...

Anyways.. Oscar can be paired with lots of diff pleco, as long as the Oscars get enough food that they wont bother the Plecos...

I have a 150 gallon with 2 Giant Oscar 8" with 4 Fancy plecos.
